Welcome
The Auria Services website provides information about the services offered by Auria Biobank and Auria Clinical Informatics.
What is Auria Biobank?
A biobank is a unit that operates within a hospital. Auria Biobank is part of Tyks Laboratories result group.
When you give your consent to the biobank, samples taken from you in connection with your treatment, as well as the related information, are stored in the biobank.
This means that your biobank samples contribute to medical research aimed at developing new medications and forms of treatment.
Auria Biobank is Finland’s first biobank. Approximately a million samples are stored in the biobank and used for medical research.
Auria Biobank is situated in Turku, in connection with Turku University Hospital (Tyks) and the University of Turku. The biobank was established by the University of Turku and the hospital districts of Southwest Finland, Satakunta and Vaasa. It was established in 2012, and in spring 2014 received its operating license from Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health. At the start of 2020, duties related to the supervision of biobanks transferred from Valvira to Fimea, the Finnish Medicines Agency.
Biobank operations are guided by the Finnish Biobank Act, which entered into force in autumn 2013. The Biobank Act secures the rights of the donor and improves researchers’ prerequisites for using the sample collections. In accordance with the Biobank Act, samples and personal data can, with the donor’s consent, be collected and saved in biobanks for future research purposes.
